Census and Rarity Survey for Barber Dimes

The BCCS is currently conducting a Census and a Rarity Survey for Barber Dimes. The project consists of:

  • A Census, where collectors can report the number of coins of each date that they have in various grades

  • A Rarity Survey, where collectors can express opinions of a particular date’s relative rarity in different grades, using a standard terminology.

The survey is welcome for all collectors (whether a member of the BCCS or not). You have several options in responding to the survey. There is a traditional paper survey for BCCS members included with the December issue of the Journal that can be returned to the Society along with the annual dues payment. You can also submit information online via this website. We are trying to make it easy for as many Barber collectors to participate as possible.

How to participate online

You may either use an Excel spreadsheet (if you have Excel available), or use web-based forms to complete the Census and Survey.

The deadline for submission is April 30, 2008.

Why a Census and Rarity Survey?

A number of years ago, the BCCS conducted a rarity survey for circulated Barber dimes, quarters, and halves. The results have previously been published in the Journal (most recently, in Volume 9, #2 (Summer 1998), but were a number of years old even at that time. With the surging coin market and Barbers becoming harder to find all the time, especially the semi-keys, it is time to update and expand this valuable information. We discussed this and endorsed the idea at the 2005 Annual Meeting at the ANA in San Francisco. In 2006, we conducted the survey for Barber Quarters, and in 2007 we surveyed the Halves. This year it is the Dimes' turn.

The BCCS will conduct a similar survey for Liberty Nickels next year, to bring all of our information up to date.
